Period-After-Opening (PAO) is a smart label applied to packages containing degradation-sensitive products for which the time-to-expiration is counted from the time of opening of the container.
The smart label is a printed electronic system based on an organic printed integrated circuit core (printed IC – based on CMOS OTFT technology) powered by a battery. The circuit actively detects the time of opening of the package via a breakable seal sensor After package opening, the IC automatically keeps track of the elapsed time and reports the remaining time to expiration to the user via a segmented electrophoretic display (in the form of a countdown bar).
Purpose / Benefits
- Simple disposability in well-established waste cycles
- Simple design of the shape of electronic labels of this kind into form factors suitable to different packages, allowing an easy retrofit to the variety of customers’ products
- Implements mechanically flexible electronic labels (down to device level), conforming to the curved shapes of the objects and simplifying application of these labels on products in an industrial setting
