Sensing Leg Prosthesis

IEE (Luxembourg)

The demonstrator tackles the global problem of phantom pain with the sense of touch prosthesis. Market standard prostheses bring back a certain quality of life, but lack in the capability to recreate a sensing of the missing body parts. A prosthesis with sensing surfaces could create a better control of movements and provide feedback for balance and a stable stand. The product is based on a printed sensing solution for pressure. Printed electronics allows complex shapes and flat and thin shapes. The printed pressure sensing cells are optimized by material selection and design for a high dynamic range at relative high pressures.

The printed pressure sensing cells are optimized by material selection and design for a high dynamic range at relative high pressures. The complete system comprises out of a sensor sock with sensing foil integrated, and readout electronic with wireless transmitter and an actuator for human feedback.

Target Group

  • Patient with lower leg prostheses that suffer from phantom limb pain

Attractiveness of the Product

  • The product solves an unmatched market need for patients with phantom limb pain
  • Creates a better control of movements
  • Until now there is no solution treating patients with neuropathic or phantom pain problems. Only strong medication as opiates with severe side effects try to overcome the symptoms of pain

Printed Electronics Components

  • Printed conductive path
  • Printed interconnection
  • Printed sensor
  • Printed dielectric / insulator
