Large-Area Damage Detection System for Cargo Trailers

In the damage sensors developed at InnovationLab, conductive traces are printed on flexible foils and damage to the foil is measured by detecting a change in the electrical resistance of the traces. The example of application given here is that of a refrigerated truck trailer where damage often occurs due to fork-lift assisted loading and unloading of merchandise. The damage is usually detected too late due to an increase in the inner room temperature.

Purpose

  • Large scale coverage is the main advantage, the foils can detect damage over 3.8 m with a resolution of of 45 cm.
  • Printing and cutting allows embedding in a composite material.
