CubeSense: The Compact Wireless Temperature Sensor

PURPOSE
Monitoring the temperature of various structures typically relies on bulky, long-cabled thermocouples. These sensors can add significant weight and are often challenging to remove, leading to increased time and costs. In response to these challenges, we have developed CubeSens, an autonomours, compact and wireless temperature sensor.

KEY FEATURES

  • Wireless Operation: Capable of monitoring temperature in real time, communicating over distances of 10-100 m with RF module.
  • Temperature Range: Measures temperatures from -40°C to 140°C within a compact volume of just 6 cm³.
  • Printed Technology: Utilizes a silver-based, inkjet-printed measuring grid for enhanced performance.
  • Flexible Design: Built on a flexible PCB, making it suitable for various applications.
  • Additional Components: Includes commercial batteries for power, switches for operation, an LED for status indication, and a 24-bit ADC for accurate readings.

IMPACT
CubeSens is designed to replace traditional thermocouples, making it ideal for monitoring aircraft, metallic structures, and satellites before prelaunch. Its lightweight, flexible design and wireless capabilities significantly reduce installation time and costs, while ensuring reliable temperature monitoring in harsh environments.

Funtionality

The CubeSens is attached to the surface of a structure using a suitable adhesive, ensuring that the inkjet-printed silver grid is in direct contact for accurate temperature monitoring. Up to 1,000 CubeSens modules can operate simultaneously for comprehensive temperature tracking. Each module has a battery life of 45 days, even in extreme temperature and vacuum conditions.

Demonstrator:
Once powered on with the switches, CubeSens begins transmitting temperature data to a gateway connected to a PC, where the information is displayed in real time. For demonstration purposes, a heat gun will be used to warm the structure, allowing users to visualize the sensor’s response and performance.

Benefits of your project

Our CubeSens could be used for tests qualification in realtime monitoring in automotive, aviation and space sector. For instance, CubeSens could be used to monitor the temperature of aircraft, metallic structures, and satellites during qualification tests.
