Winner of the category “Public Choice Award”: Smart Hard Hat

Human health sensing gathers information about heartbeat, body temperature, and noise levels, whereas impact sensing collects information on human fall and orientation. Additionally, gas exposure monitoring is another objective of this smart hard hat. The digital twin can receive all the information obtained by the hard hats and alert the user or other workers through activation of vibration and light feedback, respectively. Furthermore, this digital platform can alert the worker about entering restricted areas.

Functionality

The device should be started through a printed on/off switch. Following, the user must wait the establishment of the connection by the device with the network server and, after that, the Smart Hard Hat can be placed on the user‘s head. After these steps, the device is acquiring environmental and human sensorial data from the hard hat which is displayed on a web application.

Benefits of the project
  • Hard hats are widely used in heavy industries, such as construction, mineral exploration, among others;
  • Technological growth in last years allowed the development of hard hats for personal safety with embedded sensing capable of providing relevant sensorial information about the worker and the environment that surrounds him;
  • The highest prevalence of work accidents is in the construction area that represents around 20 – 25% of fatal accidents
  • It is crucial to improve/develop systems able to anticipate, alert and save workers from dangerous situations
  • The development of intelligent systems, such as the smart hard hat, is crucial for anticipating, alerting, and protecting workers from hazardous situations. This technology enables a significant reduction in the number of accidents and saves lives, fostering a safer and more efficient working environment
